Committee Meeting - 28th February 2025

The first Committee meeting of the year is usually a relatively quiet one as we look ahead to our annual programme of events that kicks off in the Spring. Our banner painters are hard at work, warmed by the restoration of the heating system at Elizabeth Wyatt House. New volunteers are always welcome at these Monday afternoon sessions; no knowledge of heraldry is needed – just a steady hand! Our plan is to have the banners ready to hang on 8 June after a choosing event at the Town Hall on 9 and 10 May. As usual, we’ll be putting a call out for volunteers to help with the hanging – it’s a fun morning and the more hands we have, the more teams we can put out to get the job done and dusted.

Our next public event will our annual Battlefield walk on Sunday 4 May 2025 – the 554 th anniversary of the Battle itself and on the same weekend as the Armour in the Abbey event. Places on this extended version of our usual walk are filling up fast, and are limited as we bus walkers out to Tredington to re-enact the approach of the Yorkist army, so please get in touch if you would like to join us. May will also see us participating in the Evesham Medieval Fair on 17/18 May.

Progress on the Queen Margaret sculpture project is steady but slow as we’re dependent on the capacity of a single sculptor as one would expect for a unique creation. However, that’s also giving us the space to step through the next stages of the planning approval process – vital when we’re intending to put the sculpture in the grounds of the Abbey, a scheduled ancient monument – and kick off fundraising to defray the costs which have inevitably risen since the project was first initiated. Our aim is to make a lasting addition to the public art of the Town, reflecting the key role played by one of the strong women in our nation’s history, with a significant contribution from the Society’s funds but without risking our ability to carry out the rest of our objectives both in the short and long term.

And for a short meeting, that’s a long summary, so I’ll leave it there but in the hope of meeting some of our members at events through the year.
