Committee Meeting - 24th May 2024

Our May committee meeting fell in the midst of one of our busiest months of the year, representing the anniversary of the Battle. Our conference an anniversary walk has been reported already in our news feed, and we have since held our annual banner choosing event in the Town Hall. Many have commented positively on the email process we have introduced to advise regular banner renters that the ‘book’ is open for bookings, but it is heartening to see how popular the physical event remains with many relishing the opportunity to come along, look at images of the banners available, make their choice and have a chat with the team. We’re now gearing up for the mounting and hanging weekend on 8/9 June, with a session putting banners on poles, and marking them up for where they are due to go, on the Saturday, and hanging itself on the Sunday. If you would like to come and join us for this twice a year process (hanging in June, removal in September), please contact us via the website – no historical knowledge required!

We’ll produce a more detailed update on the project to erect a new sculpture in the Abbey grounds, commemorating the role of Queen Margaret of Anjou in the Battle of Tewkesbury. In the meantime, we’ve created a permanent display in the foyer of the Abbey offices and Touching Souls Café to bring our work to the attention of more visitors to the Town. Our thanks go to Graham Turner and Jack Boskett for permission to use their striking imagery, and to local graphic designer Rick Talbot for his skills in weaving their pictures and our words into something eye-catching and informative.

Next on the agenda will be the Medieval Festival where, once again, we will be sponsoring the exhibition tent to provide a space for fellow battlefield charities and other non-profit-making heritage organisation, along with Graham Turner’s extensive and popular display of his artwork. We’ll be there, too, of course, selling a wide range of Battle-related merchandize. We’ll also be running regular short tours of the battlefield to allow visitors to relate what they see at the re-enactment to the ground on which the Battle itself was fought. Please come along and say hello – it’s always great to meet our members in person.
